Согласно Хайлеру, схема, по которой нынче разбегаются новости, выглядит так. Сначала некий коммуникатор находит интересную ссылку, и публикует ее у себя в веблоге. Ссылка быстро расходится по всем остальным веблогам. Это первая волна популярности. Вторая волна начинается, когда из веблогов ссылку извлекают различные серьезные издания - скажем... эээ... «Тостер»! «Тостер» прочитает журналист из газеты «Вечерный Кисловодск» и напишет заметку в свою alma mater. После этого известие о новом сайте / новой статье распространится среди людей, которые вообще не слышали, о том, что такое веблог, а просто прочитали статью в бумажной газете. В целом структура напоминает эпидемию, что позволило Хайлеру назвать эту схему ideavirus.
